He wrote or co-wrote several hit songs for other artists, including "Best of My Love" by The Eagles and "Heartache Tonight" by The Eagles and Bob Seger.

Early Life and Career

Souther was born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1944. He developed a passion for music at a young age, learning to play guitar and write songs. In the 1960s, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. He initially worked as a session musician, playing on albums by artists such as The Byrds and Judy Collins.

Breakthrough with The Eagles

Souther's breakthrough came in 1971 when he co-wrote "Best of My Love" with Don Henley and Glenn Frey of The Eagles. The song became a huge hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Souther's collaboration with The Eagles continued with the release of their album "Desperado" in 1973, on which he co-wrote the title track.

Solo Success

In addition to his work with The Eagles, Souther also released solo albums throughout his career. His most successful solo album was "Home by Dawn" released in 1974, which featured the hit singles "You're Only Lonely" and "Heartache Tonight." Souther continued to write and record music throughout the 1970s and 1980s, collaborating with various artists, including Jackson Browne, David Crosby, and Stevie Nicks.

Later Career and Legacy

In his later years, Souther continued to perform and write music. He released his final album, "Tenderness," in 2015. Souther's contributions to the music industry were recognized with several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Country Song in 1981 for "Heartache Tonight." He was also inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.

Industry Tributes

Musicians and industry figures have paid tribute to Souther following his passing. The Eagles released a statement saying they were "deeply saddened" by his death and calling him a "dear friend and collaborator." Linda Ronstadt, who recorded several of Souther's songs, said she was "heartbroken" to lose him and described him as "a brilliant songwriter and a beautiful soul."
